Q. What is the Open Platform 3.0 Forum?

A. The Open Croup Open Platform 3.0 Forum was established to advance The Open Group vision of Boundaryless Information Flow™ by helping organizations to take advantage of the convergence a number of modern technologies.

Q. When was the Open Platform 3.0 Forum established?

A. The Open Group Open Platform 3.0 Forum was established in February 2013.

Q. What issues does the Open Platform 3.0 Forum address?

A. There is a recognized convergence of technologies by Industry Analysts and practitioners creating the opportunity for a new federated architecture model. Gartner identified this as a ‘Nexus of Forces’, while IDC is calling it the 3rd Platform. At The Open Group, we are referring to the convergence as Open Platform 3.0.

Q. What is Open Platform 3.0?

A. Broadly this is centered around four to six technology trends converging on each other to form new business models and system designs. These themes include: mobility, social networks and social enterprise, big data, cloud computing, devices and application architectures. These convergent forces – united by the growing Consumerization of Technology and the resulting evolution in user behavior – offer the potential to create new business models and system designs. However, they also pose architectural issues and structural considerations which will need to be overcome in order for businesses to benefit.

Q. What is the purpose of the Open Platform 3.0 Forum?

A. The purpose of The Open Group Open Platform 3.0 Forum is to help organizations to take advantage of the convergence of modern technologies like Cloud, Social, Mobile Computing and Big Data. This will be accomplished by identifying a set of new platform capabilities, and architecting and standardizing an IT platform by which enterprises can reap the business benefits of Open Platform 3.0.

Q. What are the benefits of the Open Platform 3.0 Forum?

A. The Open Platform 3.0 Forum will enable organisations to:

  • Process data “in the Cloud”
  • Integrate mobile devices with enterprise computing
  • Incorporate new sources of data, including social media and sensors in the Internet of Things
  • Manage and share data that has high volume, velocity, variety, and distribution
  • Turn the data into usable information through correlation, fusion, analysis, and visualization

A. The Forum has produced a set of business use-cases and a business scenario to explain the requirements for Open Platform 3.0, and has produced a snapshot for a digital platform interoperability standard.
