Welcome to the joint Archimate®-and-Security project Website.

Background

Early in 2011 members in the Architecture, Security and Archimate Forums began a joint project to integrate security into a re-structured version of the TOGAF specification - the project being named "TOGAF next version", and Security Forum contributions being driven in a "TOGAF next version security project" (TNSP).  ArchiMate Forum members intend to incorporate the relevant TNSP "Risk Management" approach into a new Risk Modelling extension to the ArchiMate standard.

The complexity and volatility of today’s business environments challenge the ability of leaders to comprehend and shape them. In order to achieve strategic objectives, business and IT leaders increasingly rely on enterprise architects for comprehensible and credible analyses, solutions and roadmaps. The management of information security risk adds an additional dimension to this challenge, since these same leaders must carefully distinguish between what is urgent and what is important, between the sensation of risk and its logical and mathematical assessment, between actions that feel right and those that provide worthwhile protection. Statistics show that even as emerging and newly interconnected technologies constantly present new vulnerabilities and thriving hacker communities promptly exploit them, the vast majority of major security breaches occur because organizations do not comply with well-established standards and best practices.

The ArchiMate visual modelling language, particularly when used in the context of the comprehensive TOGAF architecture framework, has an important role to play here. By giving sponsors and implementers of information security controls a balanced view of threats, vulnerabilities, risks and options for mitigation, architects can motivate actions that protect organizations and their trading partners as well as consumers and the general public Architects can use and extend ArchiMate today to model important security-related information for a broad range of stakeholders, but the language includes no features specific to security.
