The Open Group Security Automation

Welcome to the Security Automation project website.

The attack/response dynamic facing IT security organizations is a significant challenge. With attacks from various threat actors escalating, there is pressure to respond to attacks faster, with greater effectiveness, and with more automation.

The Open Group Security Automation project conducted a series of customer workshops (held in London, Mexico City, and Minneapolis, and virtually via Webex) on the topic of security automation in October, November, and December, 2014. We used a business scenario approach to determine end user pain points, business objectives, and solution requirements. The output of these events is a Security Automation Business Scenario, capturing input from large IT security organizations in North America and Europe. The workshop results will be published in a whitepaper and Business Scenario in March, 2015.

To engage the security vendor community on this topic, we are now bringing a workshop to Silicon Valley. In preparation for the vendor workshop, we are asking IT security vendors to complete a short survey regarding your plans for development of automated security capabilities. All individual results will be kept confidential to Open Group staff, and anonymized before discussion. The survey may be accessed here:

The workshop will be held Tuesday March 31, at HP, and the address and agenda are provided below. We will also enable a Webex meeting facility for those who are unable to travel, and details are found at the bottom of this page.

Hewlett-Packard Co.
3000 Hanover St.
Building 20
Palo Alto CA 94304

If you are an IT security vendor product manager, product architect, or development manager, please consider attending. There is no cost for this workshop, and we need your input. Participants will have an opportunity to hear customer pain points, objectives, and product requirements regarding security automation solutions. You will also have the opportunity to weigh in on needed standards activity, and help shape work that The Open Group Security Forum is or should be doing to help move the industry forward.

For questions or to reserve a spot, please contact Jim Hietala, VP, Security, The Open Group, at j.hietala@opengroup.org, or Steve Borchert, Business Director, The Open Group, s.borchert@opengroup.org.
