The Open Group Mapping Open FAIR with STIX
You are here: Security Forum > Mapping Open FAIR with STIX

Problem

Risk management, in many organizations, functions at some organizational distance from security operations, however there is an obvious relationship between threat intelligence terms and definitions, and parts of the Open FAIR Risk Taxonomy commonly used in risk analysis and risk management. Mapping terms, definitions, and concepts from STIX (Structured Threat Information Expression, a structured language for describing cyber threat information for sharing, initially developed by MITRE, and now being developed as a standard by OASIS) and Open FAIR will help provide a bridge between risk management and security operations/incident response/threat intelligence.

Objectives

  • To make Open FAIR easier to use for risk and security groups alike, by providing a bridge to STIX.
  • To round out the materials available to support Open FAIR in use.
  • To help promote Open FAIR into the STIX community.

Expected Deliverables

  1. A whitepaper describing the relationships between Open FAIR and STIX, at a conceptual level, and with specific mapping between terms.
  2. The paper would be similar in structure and purpose to the FAIR ISO27005 cookbook.

Benefits

  • Provides another piece of new collateral for the Open FAIR standard, and something to promote.
  • Helps build brand awareness for Open FAIR in the STIX/threat intelligence world.
